Title: can't restore from desktop

hello everyone.
i'm using 4.1.2 (have to stick with this rather than upgrading for time being).
backed up old server to desktop.  created a 450MB file called esmithsg.bak or simiilar.
replaced old server with new shiny one and tried to restore from desktop.
when i selected the esmithsg.bak file and then clicked restore nothing happened.
can't seem to get this to work.
i can manually copy our website and mail over to the new server and can make all configuration changes (templates) again.  That's a hassle but doable.
The real problem is I don't fancy having to create all the usernames again!
Is there a way I can copy the passwd file or whatever over to the new server?
