OK, before i read the forums here, i thought i wanted MS-FP extensions. d0h !!!
I followed these fine instructions on stopping squid
/sbin/e-smith/db configuration setprop squid Transparent no
/sbin/e-smith/signal-event console-save
/sbin/e-smith/expand-template /etc/rc.d/init.d/masq
/sbin/e-smith/expand-template /etc/squid/squid.conf
service masq restart
and of course it worked as advertised.
so now the question is how do i reverse this??? this mysql part is really new to me and I really miss my locate!
Thanks in advance

Have you tried:
/sbin/e-smith/db configuration setprop squid Transparent Yes
Then all the same commands as before:
/sbin/e-smith/signal-event console-save
/sbin/e-smith/expand-template /etc/rc.d/init.d/masq
/sbin/e-smith/expand-template /etc/squid/squid.conf
service masq restart
That seems like it should do it.

no i haven't. was a little scared on screwing it up. i'm used to informix db's but mysql is new to me and i REALLY don't want to damage the db.
I will give it a try right now
THANKS FOR THE INPUT!
****seems i have some RTFM coming on mysql****

I don't think this particular config setting is in mysql --- I think it's in flat-file db called /home/e-smith/configuration. If I understand it correctly (low odds), it is a pointer file that tells e-smith what to configure and how to configure it. It's not well-documented, from what I have seen --- but all the 'gurus' here seem to know how to create useful incantations with it. I just write the spells down and re-mouth them --- I don't know the actual magic ;)

ROFL OMG Dan that is just too good! more ROFL. That has to be one of the best answers I have ever seen!
I will certainly take a look at db file. ***still laughing***
I tried the reverse incantation, but i don't see the squid .log files growing. I have hit about 25 different sites outside my box. It seems that no caching is taking place.
Any other magic in that bag of yours?
Thanks for all your help and the good laugh of the day!!!!

ok i am fully recovered from Dan's reply and I see the folly of my ways.
a simple retype due to typo :(
all is working good again!
Thanks Dan for tolerating a "pebkac" error!
