Title: hardware / software RAID 5
Post by: GregoryCW on June 03, 2007, 09:39:18 PM
I'm looking for advice on setting up RAID 5 on an SME box. I have looked at the adaptec 2410sa card and I have found a couple of threads that didn't speak well of software raid.

What are you doing?

Greg

Hello Greg,

a little late reaction but nevertheless,

I bought a 2410sa and used it for about a year with 4 sata drives in raid5. It works under SME, but I was not able to get the adaptec raid monitoring software to work under Centos/SME. Some java issue with rpm's you need to install.
A few weeks ago I had a power down issue on one of the drives, it immediately degraded the raid array. I also did read a couple of threads and I decided for me it is better to recover from a broken software raid than a broken hardware raid controller.
After that I switched to the built in software raid that comes with SME. It works out of the box. No problems till now. I can monitor the drives and raid with smarttools and mdadm.
It seems even faster than the 2410sa hardware raid (it takes less time for a complete virus scan).

regards
Wilmar

Hi..

I don't use HW sata raid on Sme, but IMHO the best hw controllers are 3Ware..
