The usual advice for yum errors is to run yum clean all to clean out your local cache of yum repo info and start over.
This post tells you which repositories you should have enabled (in case you've customized your yum configuration): http://wiki.contribs.org/SME_Server:Documentation:FAQ#Which_repositories_should_be_enabled
If you've been customizing your yum at all you could use the recommend defaults by runningyum --enablerepo=base \
--enablerepo=updates \
--enablerepo=smeaddons \
--enablerepo=smeos \
--enablerepo=smeupdates update

seemed to work ok, but after 10 min or so, system load goes to 15, and the server is almost locked...commands are almost impossible to enter.
And that keeps running for ages, HD's are reading and writing like crazy
i have no idea what yum is doing..

I probably should have asked before: What version SME are you running now?
Warning:
If upgrading from a system prior to 7.1.1 (7.1 update 1) you need to ensure you have the latest
smeserver-support and smeserver-yum prior to applying the rest of the updates.
The current situation is that you will pull in updates from centos that may be ahead of the distribution.
Also, in the topic announcing SME 7.1 there was a post with specific instructions to upgrade several yum-related packages before trying to do a full update from 7.0: http://forums.contribs.org/index.php?topic=35019.0
