i found out about SME server about a couple months ago and i;ve been wondering if SME server performance as file server is better than win2003 - which i;m using right and i'm not really satisfied with it.
can somebody help me to know which one is better as file server - SME server 7.1 or win2003SP2??

There have been quite a few posts in these forums where users switched from a Windows server to a sme server and have been amazed at the performance improvement. Search for them if you wish to.

It's been my experience that SME as a *file* server is as fast or faster on equivalent hardware (mostly faster) than Windows 2003 Server. However, Shadow Copy ("Previous Versions") is so compelling for end users and for me as an administrator (Users can recover their own files, overwritten or deleted, without involving me!) that I always recommend Windows Server 2003 for machines that will be only file servers. (And I still don't expose Windows machines directly to the big bad Internet.)
Just my two cents' worth.
