Hi All,
I have a small network of 7 winxp pro PCs (yuck), and sme 7.1.3 to which I have attached a canon USB multifunction prn/fax/copier scanner/coffee machine. I can print beautifully from any XP machine, but I am a bit stuck as far as faxing from these XP computers is concerned. Is there a way to achieve this? (faxing from windows through the network). I have searched, googled and the like, but could not really get to an answer.
Thanks to all in advance

Probably not what you wanted to hear, but I went through the same process some months ago with a Konica Minolta MFP - with no success.
Printing is no problem, but no chance of using the fax/scan features.
If the guys in the office need to scan, they carry their laptops to the device and plug in directly. Not very elegant, but sufficient for the rare occasions they need it.
If its not listed at http://www.linux-foundation.org/en/OpenPrinting then you're probably out of luck.
It seems that HP appear to be making the best effort for open source MFP support - http://hplip.sourceforge.net/

Hi Ked and thanks for the reply, I was fearing that, but hey, they would just have to get up from their desks and walk the huge distance of 3m to the fax. This is the problem with clents who think they know better and just go out to harvey and get the first thing that appeals to their eyes. Anyway, all of the best from WA, thanks again

Hi, Bosco55.
If you want to fax from WinXP, it expects a modem to be locally attached. This means you can NOT used the Canon MFP natively over you local network for faxes.
BUT...... help is at hand. There is a program called Hylafax for which there is an SME Contrib. In other words, it is an addon to SME Server, which acts as a network fax server. (send/receive)
See http://wiki.contribs.org/HylaFax
Now, I have not used this myself, but many people are, so it is possible - and it sounds like it would suit your needs.
see http://www.hylafax.org/content/About_HylaFAX
To do scanning over the network with a simple MFP would need special software on each PC, and I don't know of any, except what you get when you buy a proper network scanner.
Good luck.
Cheers
