My host OS is winxp. I have a static IP cable internet connection thru Charter. I've got VMware installed on my winxp OS. I have sme7.1 installed as server only in a VM. I still can't get internet connectivity.
1. Can someone help me by giving me the proper sme configuration necessary?
2. Do I have to do something in Winxp-control panel-network connections?
3. What are the correct settings for the VM ethernet, "nat" or "bridged", or "host only" or "custom"?
I've installed other Linux based servers in VM and they have no trouble accessing the internet. They (ubuntu server 6.06 and 7.04, Linux Mint, Knoppix) seem to be able to self-configure an internet connection.

3. Bridged
1. Did you give your SME an IP address. It has to be outside of the DHCP range of what ever device provides you with DHCP. ie. your router
Did you put a gateway address in. This will be the ip of your router.
The other OS will be using DHCP, thats why they can configure their 'net connection.

Ok, I thought bridged was probably the correct one.
Give SME an IP address?? You mean choose static IP and then use my internet IP number?
Gateway address?? I don't have a router, I have a Linksys cable modem. If it has a gateway address, where do I find out what it is?

I checked the Documentation in the Administration Manual in chapter 5, "Installing and configuring your SME Server Software".
When I install sme7.1 in VMWare I never get the installation step that allows you to select your local ethernet adapter.
Could this be why I don't get internet connectivity? And why don't I get this step?
