Can't follow you here.
Is the sme server the only domain controller on the network ?
Did you set the sme server to be the domain/workgroup controller and to also provide DHCP services ?
Generally you would only have one server on a network set as the domain controller (where there is more than one server). All workstations would logon to that domain controller at startup, and would have the user name and password verified by the user name list in sme server or whichever machine is the domain controller if eg there is a Win2000/NT server acting as a domain controller. An invalid user/password will stop access to network resources.
In a one server network you would generally set the sme to be a domain controller and to provide DHCP services and set DHCP on each workstation also.
Does this help ?

ta ray,
yep its the only dc in that domain on that network, it has a dhcp scope set and works succesfully for clients, so where do i specifiy the domain name when setting up s esmith? i thought i had done this and named it macdom.local, when tryin to join from a client that domain doesnt exist, the only one that exists is mitel-networks domain, am i settingthat dc up wrong? inn the server manager it says the domain is macdom.local
many thanks

In the server-manager under workgroup.
mitel-networks is your workgroup by default. Remember that if you want to use the SME as a PDC, set the Workgroup name as MACDOM.
You will then be able to register your PC to the MACDOM domain using the username/password of the admin.

kitkat has answered where to set the domain up.
You should really go through ALL the settings in the server manager to ensure they are set correctly for your system requirements
