Objective:
To get Openfiler to authenticate users from an SME Server domain controller.
Versions:
Openfiler - 2.2.r1227-3-1
SME Server - 7.1.3
So far:
SME is up and running, workgroup is set to SME01. Server name is pgasme01. Domain is mydomain.com.
Created three users and three groups.
XP machines can join the SME01 domain and access email etc on SME.
Openfiler is up and running, settings as follows:
Authentication settings
Use Windows domain controller, NT4 style
Domain - SME01
joined domain with SME admin account.
Services
Turned SMB/CIFS on.
SMB Settings
Server string - Openfiler NAS
Netbios name - nas02
WINS server - ip of SME
Network config
Hostname - nas02.mydomain.com
PDNS and gateway set to SME ip
Openfiler shows all the groups and users from SME, and updates itself when I add more users on SME, so this is working fine.
Shares have been set up on Openfiler.
An SME user logs on from an XP box in the domain, and browses to the nas02, permission is denied.
Any further advice will be really appreciated.

Maybe...
Note
No storage resources on the Openfiler appliance can be accessed from any host or network that is not specified in the Local Networks configuration list. The only exception to this is the special SMB/CIFS Homes share setting, which allows authenticated users access to their home directory.

thanks william, checked that one, i have added the lan on Openfiler. i'm a linux noob, but perhaps there is a setting in a conf file somewhere i can try changing, just need some direction. it would be fantastic if i can get this to work.
openfiler sees all the users and groups from SME, so it feels like i'm pretty close to a solution...

I've often thought about doing this but have never attempted it. Don't think I'll get around to it too soon either.
Have you tried it with a stock distro like Centos 4 ? That way you could probably get more help from the Centos, Openfiler and SAMBA people.
-
no havn't tried it with CentOS. Maybe I should, just as an exercise.
If I can get this to work with SME I can add Openfiler NAS aapliances to all my existing networks that run off SME.
Otherwise I'll just have to add a second SME box for file storage alone.
-
I suggested Centos 4 as SME7 is based on it.
I find sometimes I have to use it to do things outside of the template/db system and then stand back and look at how to achieve the same result within the realm of the template/db system.

Moving this topic to the SME 7.x contribs forum, it is more appropriate there. Thanks!
