Title: Best IP phones for SAIL?
Post by: del on July 23, 2007, 05:11:06 PM
Hi All,

Can anyone recommend a good low cost IP handset for use with SAIL/Asterisk? A search on the internet shows many different ones :?
So far I have narrowed it down to the following:
Grandstream Budgetone 102
Aastra 9112i
Grandstream GXP-2000
Linksys SPA921
Is there anymore I should be looking at? Also are the above compatible with SAIL/Asterisk? Thanks.

Regards,
Del

Hi Selintra,

Thanks for the reply, on further investigation I am wondering about connecting these to my existing LAN, am I correct in believing that if the handset has only 1 RJ45 connection I will need to have another Cat5 outlet in addition to the one already there for the PC? But if it has 2 RJ45's I can plug the handset in the existing Cat5 and the PC into the second RJ45 on the handset? Finally what IP telephones would you recommend using? Thanks again.

Del

Del,

I've got a bunch of Cisco 7940s that I use and I'm very pleased with them.

The Cisco's have a built in switch and 2 RJ45s.. They are 100MB though, so, if you're running Gigabit, the PC's attached to the phones will be runniong @ 100Mb.

We use the Linksys SPA-941's very successfully on SAIL. They only have the single ethernet port though.

If you need 2 ports you'd need the SPA-942 at least. It is better anyway having the backlit display or if you want bling the SPA-962 has a colour display.

I here the Aastra's are very good also, but I've not had anything to do with the Grandstreams.

Llandry, I'd be very happy with the Ciscos as well, but they were just way outside our budget. Although I have used them and think they are the ducks nuts....

Don't forget the Aastra 9133i's. They may not be the prettiest looking phone but they're real workhorses. They have a solid feel, the sound quality and speakerphone is very good and they have a lot of the features of you'll find on the higher end phones.

Thanks for all the suggestions, like gippsweb the Cisco's are out of my price range :D  I am leaning towards the Snom 300 at the moment and maybe trying a Grandstream 102, which has 2 RJ45 ports but is only 10mbps but at $45.00 each this may be the answer for home use.
