Title: Google webmaster guidelines
Post by: piran on July 27, 2007, 12:39:01 PM
Does SME v7.2 support what the Google webmaster guidelines (http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?answer=35769)
baldly quote as being the 'If-Modified-Since' header?

I asked some while ago for SME 7.1 but that post (http://forums.contribs.org/index.php?topic=36811.0) sank without trace.

A site of mine shows bottom line pages each of which contain a mass of
thumbnails - some times numbering in their hundreds. Uplink bandwidth
is a limiting bottleneck. When visitors return for an update their browser
obviously and reasonably issues the usual page request. I observe a
veritable bunch of 304 flags going out. Their use of resources is tangible
but admittedly nothing as demanding as each higher resolution graphic to
which each of these thumbnails point. I am trying to satisfy myself that
SME is appropriately and fully optimised in this general (operational) area.
My feeling is that the (nothing changed) response must be as lean as is
possible, in the same way that a HEAD is leaner than an equivalent GET.

----best wishes, Robert
