In my SME Server configuration interface, I've added network-printers so far. A HP LJ 4000 and a Ricoh Aficio 450. Both printers are connected with the IP, and Remote Name as "raw".
The Windows XP client log on to the SME Server domain. The user can print to the HP printer without any problems, but the Ricoh is DEAD... 8-(
In the Windows XP client the titlebar of the Printer-settings say "Access denied, unable to connect", and that's the case for both the HP and the Ricoh.
Please help me with the Ricoh problem. If I don't get it to work, the SME Server has no future in our company. 8-(

OK, I must ask...why are you using samba if the printers are themselves equipped with ethernet interfaces? I'm not sure I see any advantage to using the server as a front end?
I use two HP printers, each with ethernet, and manually configure them for IP, netmask, etc. It's a telnet session, and a simple one at that. I add the printers as hosts on the server, and let DNS resolve them by name.
Then I just use the standard XP conventions to add an "LPR" printer and they just work.
The Ricoh? No clue.

The first thing I would be checking is the actual settings within the Ricoh's IP config.
I have HP and Kyocera printers here, and I always have strange problems with the Kyoceras which I never have with the HPs.

@ Patrick: The thing with the telnet session and DNS resolving, I'm not sure I understand. You telnet what? The printers og the server? And why do you add your printers as a host, and how do you configure the XP workstation?
Sorry for my stupid questions, but this is my first time with E-Smith/SME. Hope you'll help me through this...
@ Rob: Actually I have had a breakthrough. Now I can print to both printers in question but I must be logged on the SME Server which acts as a PDC. But the "Access denied, unable to connect" in the titlebar of the printer-overview in XP bugs me.

I have Kyocera FS-1750, Kyocera FS-1050, HP CLJ 4550 and Canon iR2200. All works fine with SME. However all users must be in SME and logged in in network with they names and passwords.

I just fixed the "access denied" that I had. My HP printers worked but I had "access denied" showing in the Settings|Printers dialog box.
First I have Win2K and from my understanding the printers are set up the same as WinXP. I clicked on the "Add Printer" icon, and it starts the wizard. Click next and choose "Local Printer" instead of "Network Printer". Deselect the Plug'n'Play.
Click next.
Click on "Add a new port." It should say local port.
Click next
Enter the port name: enter your port
on my server it is \E-SMITH-SERVER\laserjet4 I am original a used the default name for my server (E-SMITH-SERVER) and the printer name you entered in the e-smith-manager printer setup.
Then it jumps to the printer setup dialog box. All else is easy.
Repeat for each printer.
I am not sure that XP is the same as Win2K. I do not know why it needs to be setup as a local printer, but it works and the "access denied" is gone. Now it says "Ready"

Thanks Gregg! It now works perfectly here. 8-) At first I couldn't print to the port with my pain in the rear Ricoh Aficio, but when I disabled bidirectional support it worked!
