Title: vmware trouble

Based on forum postings, I managed to install vmware server onto a fresh sme7.2.  While installation went smoothly, I am having trouble running guest systems.  I tried running WinXP image which said there were too many hardware differences.  So, I tried running clean images downloaded from vmware site.  I was able to register these apps and launch them, but the console displays only a black screen.  The mouse pointer is visible, but I cannot tell whether it is the host's or the guest's.  I let the systems alone for about 20 minutes thinking SME server may be slow due to low ram, but end up forcing a shutdown when nothing happens.  This has happened with a number of different vm appliances downloaded.

SME is running on a 2ghz AMD system with 512mb and 120gb.  Server console is running on 2ghz AMD Vista laptop with 1gb mem & 80gb storage.  These appliances run fine on the laptop's vm server.  The laptop's vm console is able to authenticate against SME vm server.  SME vm is configured to allows public access to port 902, but both SME & the laptop are on LAN.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Jean,
Maybe you're having trouble with vmware due to the low memory, download a system image that does not require as much RAM, there's tons on vmware's website, and try that for a starter. SME itself will easily make use of 512MB.

Thanks for the suggestion.  I tried running damn small linux with memory set to 64mb and get the same result; just a black screen.  I am thinking of testing with a vmplayer from another machine.  It's almost like the guest is running, just not able to send screen to the console.  Just a guess.

Here's a snippet of the error log which appears related.  Unfortunately, I am clueless as to what the complaint is about.

You need to re-run

vmware-config.pl.
If you upgrade your kernel, you need to re-run again.

Well, okay.  I will give that a try.  But, it was a fresh sme install followed by vm install...  Maybe I missed a step in the install contrib?

I'm also running 7.2 with vmware and working fine.
