Title: howto sync email accross 2 SME servers?
Post by: SoftDux on September 07, 2007, 09:59:32 AM
Hi all

I hope someone can help me with this one.
Ok, so I have read through the entire forum, and I still can't find an exact working answer to my question.

How would I be able to sync the email & user accounts between two SME mailservers? I want to setup a full redundant SME cluster. This can be done by using Heartbeat to failover between 2 servers, and rsync to sync ibays, and even user accounts (I don't yet know if this is safe, or best practice?). But how would I get the mail to be insync?

Affa might do the trick for you: http://wiki.contribs.org/Affa (http://wiki.contribs.org/Affa)

Not adding to the helpful end of this but...

If you are successful in getting this working a HOWTO would be helpful to myself and I'm sure to others. I'm simply backing everything up now but I would certainly love to be able to have a hot redundant machine in place.

Hsing Foo Wang (RequestedDeletion) developed a failover solution using Heartbeat for sme5.1, some 3 or 4 or 5 years ago. I think it was in the old Wiki. I believe it was still an experimental project, but it was fairly well developed, and probably worth consulting.
It may just be a matter of upgrading it to suit sme7.x, and finishing the job, where required.

Links to the old wiki (in downloadable zip file format) were published here in the forums a few weeks ago, so search for it.
Search on author RequestedDeletion as that should give you some hits.

There are many people who would be interested in this, so publish your steps & procedures as others are likely to assist in the development work.

You can download the whole tar file

Link to High Availability pages that are temporrarily listed here.
Download the pages you want as these pages will be deleted soon.

The above link refers to

which is no longer available.

Perhaps search google for it, or ask RequestedDeletion in these forums.

Does anyone have a copy of the old High Availability howto ?

Hsing Foo Wang has come up with an archived version of his original High Availability how to here:

See this post

It might be somethimng to follow up and see if it can be made to work with sme7.x

I haven't tried this yet, but will do so very soon, and share in my experiences :)
I see that CentOS 5 does have DRBD & Heartbeat included, and it's rather easy to setup (from what I have read), would there be a possibility that SME could include these packages & the managment that CentOS has in the near future?

sme8, which is under development & at alpha testing stage, uses CentOS5.
