Title: Remote Win XP cant see the workgroup folders
Post by: steve1084 on September 19, 2007, 04:21:03 AM
Hi

Have just setup SME server and I have just one problem.  When logged in remotely via VPN I can’t see the workgroup folders.  People operating locally can see my shared folder on my externally connected XP machine but can’t access it.  Have been trying all manners of setting to find the reason but after 3 days of intense trial and error I still can’t get it to change.

Latest SME server 7.x is setup in server only mode, created several accounts with shared ibays and VPN access.  I need to be able to VPN in and see and access shared workgroup folders just as if I was local.  What am I doing wrong? Have gone through the wiki and the forums and tried lots of options but nothing lets me see or access the workgroup folders or ibays.

VPN is working.  Workgroups are working locally. Locally connected can see the shared folder of remote xp computer but cant access.

Machines being used to connect to the SME Server are win XP and Vista, the Vista machines have no issues and work correctly so this is a specific XP issue

I found this to be repeatable on all 3 XP machines I tried

Does anyone else have this experience; I tried the XP patch with no effect. :sad:

Thanks
Steve :-P

Steve,
I remember seeing something about a similar problem at Bugzilla, but cannot find it.
Your best option is to fill a bug report, you will need to register, but it is a simple operation.
Thanks for taking the time to do this.

Steve, - just an idea: Are you sure that you're connecting from a net which is different (192.168.0.x) from the net you're trying to connect to (192.168.1.x).

...been there, - done that :-o

Jumba et al;

That "overlapping ip address problem" has happened twice to me and not even when SME is involved. I just checked the manual on the wiki and there is a note warning about this problem. If this is the problem in this particular situation, I can't imagine this is an XP related problem but a networking problem.

Steve, you are the first person I've ever heard of with something nice to say about Vista :-)

Hi

Yes I am confident its not an overlapping IP as I tried on several machines and also had a friend build a test sme server and we got the same problem on the test machine. ie we could reproduce the problem.

In fact we went all through the night trying different settings to no avail.

He was local with xp and all is OK

I was external and was able to login but it seems I wasnt fully logged in as when I ping the server local address It fails and I cant see the folders we setup.

I was able to put in my wan and then login to the manager but nothing made any difference.

We checked all the ip addresses and could not find any overlap

Also its XP Pro on all the machines I tested

He was also able to self test external as he has two different internet connections one cable and one ADSL

Very frustrating as everything else works so well.

Are there any contribs or workarounds that I should have a look at.

And yes I was happily surprised at the simple and easy way that vista just logged in without a hitch and all the folders appeared.
I think its important to get all the updates for vista as the first release version had issues

Thanks

I guess you should post a bug.

I have an sme file server at work and an sme gateway/fileserver at home. Work uses ip range 192.168.1.* and home uses 192.168.7.* to prevent overlapping range problem.

Work set up is

Modem ~~ Router(DHCP etc) ~~~ PC's
                                        ~~~ SME File server
Home Set up is
Modem ~~SME gateway/fileserver~~wireless router ~~ pc's
I have xp pro, xp home, W2000 and of course SME7.2, as operating systems. I can VPN in either direction and access all shares, executable content, etc.
I think your set up is something like my work set up. I guess you may want to look at;
1) Some kind of router pass through issue. Can you on an internal network printer from the outside?
2) I know that if you are behind an SME server with vpn access allowed, you cannot vpn into an external network. So if you set up is different than above that may be an issue.
2.a) I know remember I had a problem that involved getting an update for XP, your comment re Vista updates reminded me of it.
3) Raise a bug and get help from someone who knows something (not me). The debuggers are usually very helpful.
Hope that this is helpful.
