Title: how to enable microsoft updates on desktop under SME PDC

hi folks,

i am setting up a network and i would like to know how other are managing windows updates. my clients are all winXP.

could someone share some thoughts on how to enable windows updates, or alternatives for updating workstation, when SME PDC is active and users do not have administrative rights on their desktops?

I am not sure I understand your problem. The SME server will be totally transparent to Windows updates if you are using it as a gateway for your network, PDC or not PDC.  As far as updating your Windows box when users do not have administrative rights, this is not an issue either as far as I know. I have a number of sites with all kinds of Windows boxes behind an SME server-gateway, users are locked as "simple/restricted" users. and the updates from Windows keep coming days in and days out.  No problems.

you understood my question to the point.
if you have restricted access their machines are still able to install Windows Updates without any problem.
And i would assume that since i enabled proxy caching then patches will only be downloaded once and then be server from the cache.  which will save me time. :D

With the caching, this may not be correct, as the proxy will only cache smaller files. You may need to adjust your proxy settings to allow larger files to be cached and also the time the cache lasts.
