Title: how to install server with windows
Post by: krit86lr on September 25, 2007, 04:53:55 PM
Hello  :-)  I am new here, and I hope that I am posting the right place.  I apologize if it is not.

My question is how to run Windows and the Server on the same machine.  If this question has been answered I apologize, and would appreciate the related links.  My searches did not provide the information that I was looking for.

I just came across this server by accident this morning, and I am very intrigued.  I am a huge fan of opensource software.

Anyway, my question is about the installation.  The installation states that it will format all hard drives that are attached.  How do I make my machine, a  server and windows machine?

The machine that I use at work is the company server machine, but it has windows installed on it, and I use it the same as any other computer.  Can I do that with this program?

I think that a windows installation will format the hard drive too if I remember correctly, so I don't think that I can install windows after the server.

Is there an option, when installing the server, to partition out the hard drive space that has windows installed?

Okay, that is all of my questions I think.  LOL  Even if you have a link that provides this information, that would be great.  Thank you so much.  :D

Thank you so much!
Kristin

I don't think you can set it to work as part of a dual boot system...

SME Server creates a ... errr... SME Server.... plain and simple, to exclusion of all else...

Unless anyone knows differently??  :)

Awww, that's a bummer, but thanks so much for clearing that up for me.  :)  Cheers!

I don't think you want to try that... it'll probably be possible with a lot of knowledge and hacking, but not plain out of the box. If you want to mess with two systems on the same box you might want to think about running one of the two as a virtual system. Seach for VMWare or virtual/virtualisation on the forums and wiki.

In my opinion, it will be better you try the SME server on a virtual machine.
Try VMWare or Virtual Server 2007. That may help.
I did try to install SME Server on a Virtual Server 2007 base virtual system. It works fine.
