Yesterday I installed SME Server 7.2 VM via VMware player. The install was flawless. I was able to login from several other locally networked PC's using: http://192.168.1.30/server-manager.

I saw that updates were available, so I went ahead with the updates. That went well then a reboot was necessary.

As it stands, I can longer access the server-manager via any web browser. The network environment hasn't changed and the server IP is the same as it was when I first configured the server.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you in advance.

Peter

The kernel probably got upgraded. Run vmware-tools-config.pl again.

Also be sure to check this link if you run into troubles installing vmware-tools: http://synapticsolutions.com.au/?page_id=28
It gives you a clue on how to solve the script hanging on the removal of the network card kernel modules.

Thanks so much for your assistance. I suppose that I should have started off my original post by saying: that I am as new to "anything Linux" as they come. A complete noobie in factc(coming from a WIN_XP enviro)

As far as running vmware-tools-config.pl goes. This paragraph is copied directly from their knowledge base:

Note: VMware Player is meant to play pre-built virtual machines. The person who creates the pre-built virtual machine includes VMware Tools if it is needed. If you want to add VMware Tools to a virtual machine, then you should use a VMware product like Workstation or VMware Server, which allows you to alter virtual machines.

So what now?

Thanks again in advance.

Peter

We probably need to establish exactly what you are doing.

From my reading of your posts and a little guess work, you have:
- installed VMPlayer on a Windows workstation (XP I assume)
- installed a prebuilt SMEServer 7.2 Virtual Machine
- installed the suggested updates via the Software Installer panel on server-manager
- are unable to access the server-manager panel as you would expect after the update

Updates like that should NOT affect access to the server-manager panels, but if you went into the Remote Access panel and changed some of the items there, or did a reconfigure from the Admin Console (the text based menu within the vmware console) and changed from server-only to server-gateway (or private server-gateway), then you could well have restricted access.

All the stuff about vmware-config.pl is if you are running vmware-server on your SMEServer.

If we can work out where you are, and what you are doing, we'll be able to help a little better (I hope).

As far as I know that is not true in case the kernel is updated in the guest OS. I always (have to) run the script to create proper kernel modules in the guest OS as well...

Could it be a totally different problem?

Which updates did you install. I had problems accessing the server-manager after I did a yum-update with the centosplus library enabled (php 5 was installed which causes the problem).

Is the sme-server running, are there also other problems?

I think you'll find I was talking about vmware-tools-config.pl on the guest OS.
