Title: Wordpress Problems with fresh install
Post by: mvdw on December 11, 2007, 01:50:12 AM
OK, I must be really really stupid, because I can't for the life of me get my wordpress installation working (or, at least, I can't log in to add to the blog)...

I followed the instructions at http://wiki.contribs.org/Wordpress, and I get a blank wordpress blog alright, but how on earth do I log in? I tried the wordpress/password pair in the wp-config.php file, I've tried the admin/password pair, and I can't log in. What is going on???

I get an "invalid username" error when I try to log in using the wordpress user, and the randomly-generated password listed by the "config show wordpress" command. It's got me absolutely stumped. Note that it's a wordpress error - the invalid user page is in the wordpress theme, rather than a "403 forbidden" error.

I've tried deleting the wp-config.php file, and generating the file on the web site, but I get a "can't write to directory" error. The wordpress directory is owned by root:root, so it's probably not really surprising.

I've tried logging in as the smeserver admin user, using the admin password, with the same result (invalid user). Same thing with my username/password, root and its password. I have access to the server, but I can't use the blog. This is extremely frustrating, because it should "just work".

Cheers,
mvdw

[edit: added some details of what I've tried]

Some more information:  I downloaded the wordpress emergency admin user reset script from village-idiot.org, and I can't even use that script to reset the password - neither of the usernames 'admin' and 'wordpress' are the admin user. How do I set the admin user? Is it done during setup? Is it done using the mysql command line, or could I do it using myphpadmin (how?). I'm really stuck as to why this doesn't work; it should be easy.

Fixed the problem - t seems the /opt/wordpress directory had the incorrect permissions; simply changing that to www:www (from root:root) allowed me to run the install script, which then let me do all the installation stuff...

Something so simple caused so much grief...

That may be a fix but it's not the correct fix
you haven't helped the next user to have a painless install
to help everyone raise a bug as your told every post.

I got to "install wordpress" a fresh install as in "http://wiki.contribs.org/Wordpress" didn't !?.

cheers

If you would have followed the instructions you would have followed first the section called Install and second the section called Setup, there it is explained what you need to do to get it running...
