Title: Will an i586 kernel work on an i686 CPU
Post by: psoren on December 17, 2007, 08:52:56 PM
Hi,

I am going to upgrade the MB from an older VIA board vith a i586 CPU to a newer one with the Nehemiah core which is a i686 CPU. If i just simply swap the boards, will the Nehemiah run on the i586 until the next kernel upgrade? And if yes, is there anything to worry about?

I have done a similar hardware swap. I booted on the CD, started the installer (hit enter) and let it swap the kernel. The procedure was straight forward for me, and everything worked like just like it used to.

If you plan on doing something like this, remember to backup, or (the lazy way) clone the harddisk.

Cheers

I believe so, but it shouldn't take you long to find out.

I have just today done the hardware upgrade as described in the initial post.
I can confirm that this works without any problems. It still runs on the i586 kernel but i believe that it will upgrade to i686 once there is another kernel upgrade on yum.
