As far as I know from looking at the process list SME Server uses dovecot.
As an advice for the future: never delete configuration files and restart services on SME Server without knowing what you are doing, the architecture on SME Server is not necessarily the same as on other linux machines, a lot of services are supervised and configuration files are generated based on templates and an internal configuration database.

thx but it is only a test installation of sme server :d
i have tried to modify the /etc/dovecot.conf following this howto http://tumbleweed.org.za/2007/10/03/dovecot-shared-mailboxes-the-correct-way/
but seems do not work
seems that sme server don't read the config in /etc/dovecot.conf

Bump!
I'm also looking into shared folders but from what I see at http://wiki.dovecot.org/SharedMailboxes SME is using dovecot 1.0.x which makes things more complicated.
Also the upcoming SME8 seems to use dovecot-1.0.7-7.el5.i386.rpm. Any chance this get upgraded to one of the latest versions, or is this upstream (CentOS) driven?

I think so
