Title: grub-install Question - unexpected solution
Post by: bloodshoteye on January 18, 2008, 10:12:20 AM
Hi,
I have a 7.3 server that appears to be compromised by a power surge - boots to flashing cursor, no grub or any other message.

1) I can boot to CD, so I'm going to attempt a grub-install to dev/sda1 -  have 3 SATA drives, so is this correct?

2) Also gnu.org says if there is a /boot partition, then the command is:
grub-install  dev/sda1 --root-directory=/boot /dev/sda1
But there is no separate /boot partition with SME server, right?

Just being super cautious at this stage - could someone put me at ease, please?
Thanks a lot.

No. If you can boot to CD, and can mount both / and /boot file systems, then you can safely use the upgrade option from CD, and that will replace grub correctly.

Solved in another way:
Out on interest I removed one of the drives from the RAID array and rebooted. To my surprise the system booted.
I pushed in a spare, resync'd them and all is well.
Seeing the drive is still under g'tee, my day ends with a

Thanks for the advice, though.

You shouldn't be surprised. If a drive fails, you want the surviving drive/drives to be able to boot.
