Title: usb device not accepting address
Post by: logan on January 23, 2008, 10:17:59 AM
Good day,

Googled and searched on forum, but either there is nothing or my choice of search criteria is not correct, because i cannot find anything which is helpful in resolving this issue.

Have an external hard drive connected to server (SME 7.3) via USB.
The dive has worked fine until earlier this day. I found that the device does not show in /dev as usual.
I used the command "dmesg" and the following is what was displayed concerning USB device:

usb 1-2: USB disconnect, address 2
usb 1-2: new high speed USB device using address 3
usb 1-2: device not accepting address 3, error -71

I have changed the USB cables between the server and HDD and i have also used different USB ports on the server, but the device just does not mount.
I have found the above mentioned on the net but then it describes error -110 which apparently is faulty USB ports or faulty device, but i cannot seem to find what error -71 is?

I am still searching for a solution, but any assistance or info will be appreciated! :)

Thank you,
David

Did you have error -71 or error 71 in your google search string?

Leaving the hyphen out may yield better results.

SIGH!
I are n00b! :P
Yes, by leaving the hyphen i managed to get more info on the problem. Unfortunately nothing that resolved the issue but at least now i have something to work with! Thank you william_syd!!

Found this http://www.linux-usb.org/FAQ.html#ts6 (http://www.linux-usb.org/FAQ.html#ts6) which does give some indication of possible reasons for the problem.

In my attempts to test various solutions i removed the external; and plugged it back many times, but it did not add as a device according to dmesg. I then plugged it into the neighboring office's SME (7.3) and there it added as device with no issues! 0.o?
I then came back to the office and plugged it back into my SME and YAY now its added! (does the chicken dance)

Something is wrong and i still do not know what it is. When i do find a applicable solution i will add to this thread, in case someone else has same issue.

Yes, by leaving the hyphen

You can enclose the -71 in quotes "-71" to get a similar or maybe better effect.

Did you power down the HD between replugging events on the same machine?

dmesg | grep "usb"

Thank you for all the links! I shall read through them and see what i can do and provide feedback, or perhaps more questions!

william_syd, thank you for the tips on "" i haven't used them for a while but think they do come in handy if you need real specific results. I used the command and found following output:

usbcore: registered new driver usbfs
usbcore: registered new driver hub
usbcore: registered new driver hiddev
usbcore: registered new driver usbhid
drivers/usb/input/hid-core.c: v2.0:USB HID core driver
usb 1-2: new high speed USB device using address 2
usbcore: registered new driver usb-storage
usb 1-2: USB disconnect, address 2
usb 1-2: new high speed USB device using address 3
usb 1-2: device not accepting address 3, error -71
usb 1-1: new high speed USB device using address 5
usb 1-1: USB disconnect, address 5
usb 1-1: new high speed USB device using address 6
usb 1-1: control timeout on ep0in
usb 1-1: device not accepting address 6, error -71
usb 1-1: new high speed USB device using address 7
usb 1-1: control timeout on ep0in
usb 1-1: device not accepting address 7, error -71
usb 1-1: new high speed USB device using address 8
usb 1-1: control timeout on ep0in
usb 1-1: device not accepting address 8, error -71
usb 1-1: new high speed USB device using address 9
usb 1-1: control timeout on ep0in
usb 1-1: device not accepting address 9, error -71
usb 1-1: new high speed USB device using address 10

What should be noted is that the device, at this point, is successfully mounted in /media. I have no idea what the meaning of the above output is seeing as the device is mounted and accessible...but i am still learning of the inner workings of SME. But hopefully after reading the links RayMitchell provided i would have a better idea of what to do or even perhaps an solution?! :)

I read through the links, thank you. I did all which was specified before i even posted on this forum, which made me even more confused as to why the external drive does not mount on the system.  :?:

I decided to try and use an older external drive for our backups, and found that this drive mounts beautifully every single time!
So i decided to test if it may be the bracket casing that the external has been placed in.
The external casing used during all these issues was the Meccer: Sata to USB Mobile Enclosure 3.5" (HD-343). I removed the HDD from this and installed it in a Canyon: Sata-II/USB2.o Aluminum External 3.5". And low and behold, with the canyon bracket i have no problem mounting the device.
In order to fully test this i acquired a new bracket of the Meccer type. Installed the HDD in this and plugged to the server, and all i received was error -71. When i placed it back in the Canyon bracket, it works fine.

sigh!

I am not sure if it is drivers or firmware (i do not know what is installed on the external drive brackets) but something on the Meccer brackets are conflicting heavily with SME 7.3.

Hope this does provide some sort of help to other people, or does lead to a final resolution to this kind of situation! :)
