Title: Software Installer & Yum confused after upgrade 7.2 to 7.3
Post by: allsorts on January 27, 2008, 06:11:04 PM
Hi,

Something has gone a bit awry with the Web based Software Installer and Yum since I did the upgrade from 7.2 to 7.3.

Firstly I'm getting two email messages per night telling me that updates are available via yum, timed roughly 5 minutes apart.

Secondly I just tried to install those updates (LPrng etc) via the installer but after clicking the "install updates now" button I get the "Please wait - yum running()" a pause of a few tens of seconds then i'm returned to the "Software Installer" homepage. I don't see any information from yum about getting updates checking installing etc . Looking via ssh I can't see any yum processes either.

I've run a manual update via ssh and the commands:

yum update

This ran OK until after the unwrapped list of updated pacakges and the word "Complete!", it then spewed out an error message:

> Error in sys.exitfunc:
> Traceback (most recent call last):
>  File "/usr/lib/python2.3/atexit.py", line 20, in _run_exitfuncs
>    func(*targs, **kargs)
>  File "plugins.py", line 159, in run
>  File "/usr/lib/yum-plugins/smeserver.py", line 69, in close_hook
>    os.unlink('/var/run/yum.status')
> OSError: [Errno 2] No such file or directory: '/var/run/yum.status'

Followed by a long pause then back to the command line prompt. The commands:

"signal-event post-upgrade" and "signal-event reboot" appear to have run properly  with the normal long wait after the reboot as the system reconfigures itself.

I've looked in the bug tracker an forums but see no other mention of these problems so I expect it's some quirk of my system rather than a real bug, but I will file one about the manual update.

<later> Forgot to add after the manual update and reboot the web Software Installer is showing the reconfigure/reboot now page, probably not surprising but if yum fails surely this out to be trapped and appropiate action taken by the web interface?

Is yum still failing for you?

I've not had an email from my server telling me that there are new updates so I assume ( incorrectly?) that there aren't any. When the next updates appear I'll use the Software Installer and report what happens.

Cheers
Dave.

Ok so lots of updates now available. Trying to use the web Software Installer is confusing...

I get the first "Please wait Yum running()" OWTTE but on the next refresh get returned to the Software Installer page telling me that there updates to install...

Going in via SSH I see, with ps -ax, that there are proceses running :

 4487 ?        Ss     0:00 /usr/bin/perl -w /sbin/e-smith/signal-event yum-update
 4488 ?        S      0:00 /usr/bin/logger -p local1.info -t e-smith-bg
 4489 ?        S      0:02 /usr/bin/perl -w /etc/e-smith/events/yum-update/S10yum-import-keys yum-update
 4490 ?        Z      0:00 [sh] <defunct>
 4798 ?        R      0:00 /usr/lib/rpm/rpmq -q --qf %{DESCRIPTION} gpg-pubkey-e42d547b-3960bdf1

And these appear to progess normally, hard to tell from the ps -ax output though. The server is currently chuntering away to itself with various things  showing in the ps list refering to the updated packages. So it looks to be updating but I'm not seeing the yum output in my browser. Oh it's all stopped now and the above processes have disappeared.

Loading another  page from the web admin then going back to the sofware installer has retruned me the list of what it has been up to. That all looks OK no error messages.

On clicking "Reconfigure" I don't get a new page just my browser "waiting for...". I can see "signal-event post-upgrade" happening in the ps list though and the server is now rebooting itself. At some point I did get the "Your  system is rebooting message" and after the reboot/reconfigure The Software Installer page tells me that the system is up to date...

Doesn't help a lot does it?  Very confusing not getting the results of Yum etc shown as it does things, going back to the default installer page on the first refresh makes you think it's not doing anything...

Cheers
Dave.

I just tried the same thing with a similar result.
I then clicked on Date and Time panel, and then clicked on Software Update Panel and the update then started appearing on screen and displaying what was going on etc.
Perhaps mirrors are busy as everyone is suddenly doing downloads and/or it may be a case of timeouts occurring.

In any case please report what you have seen to the bugtracker.
