I found a problem with the METADOT contrib (http://wiki.contribs.org/Metadot). The install proceedure goes well until about 2/3 of the way though

Try removing perl-Test-Builder-Tester-1.01-1.2.el4.rf or simply just remove perl-Test-Simple as in the example below, but I would recommend removing perl-Test-Builder-Tester-1.01-1.2.el4.rf first

now I have 2 problem, including my web server not working, and this is where I don't know what to do as I don't know perl or how to fix my web server.
I followed the instructions "copy" & "paste" where it said to change things.

Cannot spawn backend process
this means that mod_perl is not activated and or speedy cgi is not installed either
run this command to activate mod_perl
config setprop modPerl status enabled
also, check the Modify Metadot configuration file section of the metadot howto
then run the index.pl command again
with your web server not working, I would try removing the 87Metadot in the /etc/e-smith/templates-custom/etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf/
then run these commands
expand-template /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf
/etc/rc.d/init.d/httpd-e-smith restart
then check what your web server is doing, if it works again, double check the 87Metadot against the one in the metadot howto and then restart apache again
expand-template /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf
/etc/rc.d/init.d/httpd-e-smith restart
if you get errors again, go into /var/log/httpd and post errors here, so we can find what the actual problem is caused by

The wbe server is working again. I now am left with the problem of metadot. I think that my porblem(s) start with the "87metadot" file.

At the top has ServerName yourdomain.com should that have been changed or left as is?
Then the cd /opt/metadot/metadot
Next, run the index.pl file on the command line :
perl index.pl
if no errors go to next step
still fails. Will check them again and test it soon.
Also untill I got the web server running again I had a syntax error in the /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf file. Invalid command www
Don't know whether that helps locate the problem but I thought I would mention it

what version of sme are you using run the rpm -qa | grep to see what version if any you are using
rpm -qa | grep smeserver-release
rpm -qa | grep mod_perl
rpm -qa | grep perl-CGI-Persistent
rpm -qa | grep perl-CGI-SpeedyCGI
the above commands should show what version they are, as in example below, please provide output in return post of what versions you have

these are a list of perl modules that should be installed for metadot to work,
run this command rpm -qa | grep perl*.* |more and compare it with the list below, if most of these are not showing, then it is possible that the Dag repository did not pick up the perl modules that are needed for metadot
