Title: webaccess to ibay files
Post by: bins on February 07, 2008, 12:32:41 PM
This may be an easy answer, but I cant work it out or find anything on the wiki/in the forums.

I would like to make the files part of some ibays open to web browsing.  Natively, I cant work out what to do.

I have tried the webshare contrib, but that requires using a new set of folders, which I do not want to do!

Can anyone point out the obvious?

Here http://wiki.contribs.org/SME_Server:Documentation:Administration_Manual:Chapter14#Creating_an_i-bay you´ll find information about to choose Public access to your ibay.

If you need a better looking for file listing , search for modIndex contrib.

BTW: RTFM ... there a lot of info there.

Jader,

thanks for this.

I did RTFM, and the wiki, but, that I can see, it does not describe what I require.  They do describe:

Shared folder (I already use this)
File access in the HTML folder (I want to access the 'files' folder)
FTP (I want web access)

I would be grateful if you could indicacate where 'web file sharing' is discussed ITFM!

File access in the HTML folder (I want to access the 'files' folder)

i-bays don't support that. If you want a file to be accessed from the web, put it in the html folder. It's as simple as that.

Charlie,

thanks for the update.

Looking forward, could this be implimented via a mod?

Why would it need to be? The rule is simple - if you want something to be web visible, put it under html. Why would you want to change that?

Bins

If you choose "Entire Internet (no password required)" in "Public access via web or anonymous ftp" field, you could put your files on IBAY/files/ and see them using a browser pointing to: http:SERVER/IBAY/files/ or put them on html folder and access by http://SERVER/IBAY/

Is that you´re looking for ?

I think it's pretty clear what he's asking for.

He probably taught his users how they can access their home folder through ftp

IE. ftp://servername.com and then logging in, or maybe he even taught them how to ftp://username@servername.com

or maybe his users have ftp network places through windows so they can access their stuff from their homes.  It's not so secure, but it's pretty useful for staff.

Now he wants staff to be able to access stuff already saved in the files section of an ibay (hopefully by logging in using their username/password).  The user "admin" can do it.  How does a normal user do it?  And if it can't be done, or is too risky, then perhaps a NFR (instead of a RTFM) is a better response.

I trust that RTFM stands for "Read The Famous Manual".  Any other interpretation could offend some of our readers (especially new members) and  is definitively  not in the spirit of SME, as pointed out in a report to moderator today by a member of this otherwise civilised forum.  I am sure we all agree.

That access is blocked on sme7.x, it used to work on earlier versions of sme
ie
You don't have permission to access /ibayname/files/ on this server.

Are you sure ? I just tested it on a SME7.2 and it works!

EDIT: Removed URL...later in this thread RayMitchell confirms it can access. Other confirm this work on SME 7.3 too.

ftp:\\<ibay_name>:<ibay_password>@<urlname>

Allows access to files with the 'files' folder in an ibay via a web browser.....

Need to allow SME remote access too though and give right access permissions on the ibay.....

Yes I can access that.
Perhaps it changed on sme7.3, as I cannot access .../files on a sme7.3 server.
I think access is settable though, IIRC.

It still works fine with SME 7.3
http://domain.com/files (domain.com served from some ibay)
I've been using it with few last versions of SME. Folder /files is accessible directly, but not visible with indexer and obeys the same password permissions as the rest of the ibay.
