Title: I seem to have broken my root password
Post by: dallas on February 26, 2008, 11:06:30 AM
Hi,

I ran a software update today and after a reboot I can't login to my SME server. All passwords appear to have changed and SSH into the box (using a users login) closes the connection after authentication. I can get to the server-manager web page because the login is cached. Everything appears to be working but I can't login using any id (root or admin) and I fear that if I close the browser I will also lose the server-manager page.
Does anyone have any recovery suggestions. System is 7.3 and up to date to today. I have a 7.3 CD around somewhere.
Thanks in advance.

Dallas

In the server-manager check Security->Remote access->Secure Shell Settings. It  should read

Secure shell access: Accces only from local network
Allow administrative command line access over secure shell: Yes
Allow secure shell access using standard passwords: Yes
TCP Port for secure shell access: 22

to allow ssh root login

If the security setting was not the issue and the passwords were really changed, follow these instructions: http://wiki.contribs.org/SME_Server:Documentation:FAQ#Reset_the_root_and_admin_password

Consider reporting a bug, if this has happend during a normal system upgrade.

I have managed to restart as single user as reset both the root and admin passwords. I can ssh in as root and admin but not as a user. SSH settings are correct. This is not a bug, I screwed it up by using the command signal-event post-install instead of post-upgrade. In the end I may need to do a fresh install from CD.

I can ssh in as root and admin but not as a user.

Isn't this standard SME behaviour?
