Title: Connection issue
Post by: lionheart on April 02, 2008, 12:38:46 AM
I have my SME server set up to server and gateway mode with it behind a router and have already opened the necessary ports for http, ssh ect and have no problem viewing the website i have on the default page.

Now the problem comes in, i have Teamspeak (Voip) set up on the server and have it running fine.. apart from the fact no one on the WAN side of things can connect to it..
i have opened the ports needed and have even tried (DMZ) mode.. but no luck.

any suggestions?

Your sme server should really be in server only mode when behind a router.
The router in this case does all the gateway/firewall/login client/dhcp etc functions and you setup port forwards in your router for all the ports/services that you want running on sme server.

It's difficult to analyse your setup as you do not tell us all the settings in the server & network.
My guess is your server is trying to connect to the Internet via it's own gateway, which is non functional as your WAN side is connected to nothing.
You need to specify, in Configure this server screens, a different gateway address, ie your router.

above is the layout of my network and the ip ranges used on my network.

my server is in server and gateway mode and ssh and ftp are enabled for global access.

hope this gives you more information, any more that you require just let me know.

Those 2 machines should be protected by the firewall in your router.
The local network side of your router is already "private".

Why do you have your sme server in server and gateway mode ?

I assume your router and cable modem are already doing the login client function and providing other services to the network eg firewall, dhcp, etc, so you have unnecessary duplication in your sme server.

The correct way to configure your sme server in this arrangement, is in server only mode, and have the sme and the 3 client machines connected to the router via the hub.

i agree, the only reason i have it set up like this is i cannot access the server and alot of its applications from the routers side of things.. that's why i have to have a choice of being in front or behind the server.

What exactly do you mean by "i cannot access the server and a lot of its applications from the routers side of things..", that's rather vague and non specific. What do you mean by "the routers side of things" ?

You probably have some misconfiguration.
Please explain in much better detail.

when the client machines are connected to the router i cant access the server manager or ssh / ftp the server.. the only way i have so far been able to do these things is to be in the sme's local network...

With the sme server in server only mode, what is it's local IP ?
Interpreting your drawing it's 172.66.10.0 ?

Your router appears to be 192.168.2.2 ?

So therefore the local IP for your sme server in server only mode should be 192.168.2.xx

Is that what you have done, and you say you cannot connect to the sme from a workstation ?
Did you set the same workgroup name on all workstations and sme server (in server manager) ?
Are you using the same subnet mask on all workstations and sme server usually 255.255.255.0 ?
Did you specify the IP of the router for the Internet connection gateway in sme server Configure this server screens ie 192.168.2.2 ?

You may also need to specify the router's IP as the DNS server in the sme Configure this server screens, as usually the router is configured with external DNS server IPs ie your ISP's.

I have just setup two sme servers in server only mode this evening and attached them to an existing network with another sme acting as gateway (ie a router in effect) and I can see and access them without any problem from all workstations. You must be doing something very wrong !

Here is how I would set it up.

Wan
V
Router
V
V
Hub/switch>>>>>>SME in server only mode with 1 nic and only the ports forwarded from the
V                        router that I need (NOT IN DMZ). Suggested IP 192.168.2.254
V
LAN clients including Mine with any ports forwarded that I need
or DMZ if absolutely necessary for mine ip range 192.168.2.xxx.

In this setup SME is physically attached as any other LAN device. All lan machines will be able to access it.
