Title: Mailman/SME problems - totally stuck
Post by: dd3 on April 15, 2008, 02:17:00 PM
ok, so Im not a complete beginner with SME (go back to the esmith days) but Im certainly no expert.

I have installed mailman from the contribs and have it setup and have created a mailing list.

I do however have a few issues which I suspect are connected.

When users subscribe the email addresses they reply to e.g. mailinglist-request@mydomain.com dont appear to exist when they are recieved on my sme server and end up in my admin account.

if someone sends an email to mailinglist@mydomain.com the email is bounced and in the qmail logs it indicates the recipient is unknown, however on the mailman interface mailing list is there and can be configured etc. and the registration process runs.

Im sure its something simple Ive missed, so any help is much appreciated!

You might have stumbled on a bug there as I noticed in the wiki the RPMs listed there are in a WIP (work In Progress?) folder. Did you install it using the wiki commands or did you really install from the SME Contribs repository?

I used the following

wget http://www.gormand.com.au/smeserver/WIP/smeserver-mailman/smeserver-mailman-1.3.0-14.noarch.rpm
wget http://www.gormand.com.au/smeserver/WIP/smeserver-mailman/mailman-2.1.5.1-34.rhel4.3sme01.i386.rpm
yum localinstall mailman-2.1.5.1-34.rhel4.3sme01.i386.rpm smeserver-mailman-1.3.0-14.noarch.rpm

as taken from the wiki.

Im trying to read everything i can and there is discussions about creating qmail/mailman aliases and running scripts in different places. is this the problem i have? i.e. qmail doesnt know about the mailman aliases needed for the list?

Any suggestions welcome. I really need to get this mailing list live a lot of people waiting  :???: is there another option I could use that would enable anonymous distribution of messages between a subscription only group of posters?

FIXED.

In the end I uninstalled and reinstalled. In the meantime i deleted an ibay that had the same name as my mailing list as I had a hunch this may screw things up.

sure enough its all working fine. So it seems if you have an ibay created then try and make a list of the same name it wont work!

thanks

I think you should report this as a bug against the mailman contrib. If this contrib is writing stuff in the internal configuration database it should handle exceptions like that and report an error instead of not letting users know of the problem.

THE UPDATE BROKE IT! :x

Im now getting this if i goto any of the mailman admin pages.

Mailman CGI error!!!
The Mailman CGI wrapper encountered a fatal error. This entry is being stored in your syslog:
Group mismatch error. Mailman expected the CGI wrapper script to be
executed as one of the following groups:
[apache],
but the system's web server executed the CGI script as group: "www".
Try tweaking the web server to run the script as one of these groups:
[apache],
or re-run configure providing the command line option:
'--with-cgi-gid=www'.

I have no idea where or how to make the changes mentioned. Going to try and get into bugzilla as advised. aaarg.... I released the mailing list to users yesterday, today its broken thats all i need  :( :(

What is the point in raising a bug for something like this (which causes whole setups to stop working ) if they are then closed with out resolution?  :-?

I now have no way of clarifying further/updating asking questions etc. as the bug has closed.

There are 2 compatibility issues here both of which stop mailman/sme implementation from working. :(

What bug do you mean? The one listed just a little above your post? That is resolved and fixed. Please post the bug number you are referring to.

how is it fixed? there are 2 issues, neither of which are lsted as fixed afaik, just lowered priority and a comment that you should only download sme updates? or have i misunderstood the very brief feedback on the last 2 posts?

As I read the bug, Shad means there are new versions of the rpms here

Yes that is correct, to update:
Code: [Select]
yum upgrade --enablerepo=smecontribs

so will i get an automated update through server manager?

what about the update for mailman that previously i installed and wrecked everything? should i now allow this to install? (its still telling me i need to update it)

how will the problem Ive had not happen to others?

Im just not familiar with how this all fits together.
