I have installed all the various components I think to block web sites, Dansguardian, Squidguard, however when I set up my clients to use the sme computer as the gateway it does not block anything.
Can anyone help me sort out where my particular problem is? Ive been stuck on this for some time but cant figure out where I have gone wrong. Im using 7.3. Ihave a 6.0 computer that works fine ?
thanks.

Thank you for your response.
I have followed all of the essential steps layed here I believe. It is my understanding that all I need to do is install DansGuardian, set my gateway to the computer I installed DansGuardian on and it should work. I have not done any of the other things eg "Modifying Firewall and Proxy" because we are not in an environment where this is necessary, so far as I know. This is only if people know how to change the gateway. We have several. We actually use different gateways based on the individuals using them.
I have also not changed the "Modifying Dansguardian configuration" because I think it should just work. Again perhaps I'm wrong. Also I have not changed the
accessdeniedaddress = 'http://YOURSERVER.YOURDOMAIN/cgi-bin/dansguardian.pl'
line, I assume it should at least give me a default response when I go to sex.com

You are incorrect, the instructions about proxies etc are required.

Added note to make it clear to future readers.

Configure your workstation web browser to auto detect proxy port
Go to your workstation and open your browser eg Internet Explorer or Firefox or your preferred browser
Change the settings for Connections to LAN
Select Auto detect proxy
Or alternatively use the server IP 192.168.1.1 (or whatever yours is) and use a port of 8080

Can anyone tell me what the current SquidGuard version is for SME and where to get it.
I found and downloaded squidguard-1.2.0-2.2.el4.rf.i386.rpm but now that i have installed it my internet has stopped working, when I point computers to it to use it for a gateway.
I followed
http://forums.contribs.org/index.php?topic=34337.msg151745#msg151745 a mini how to but there are a few errors eg.
"Inside that directory I files to put the relevant codeā¦"
and some other things that are not quite clear.
I have now removed the squidguard but still I cant access the interent when I point to this machine as the gateway.
Thanks.

Uninstall squidguard & dansguardian rpms
signal-event post-upgrade
reboot
Then install ONLY dansguardian following ALL the steps in the Howto carefully.
Report your results with any error messages.
Don't try to install & setup 2 different contribs at the same time, get one working first.

Thank you for your advice.
I have deiced to start from scratch. This is a comptuer that we will eventually swap for our sme 6.0 machine.
So i re installed 7.3 and wiped away everything.
I'm sorry I hope you will be patient with me. I guess what I'm trying to do is get working what works on our 6.0 machine. This has been a very good solution for us. As far as I can tell on our 6.0 Server/gateway we have only installed squidguard. When I do a "locate dans" I get nothing. But when I do a "locate squidguard" then I get squidguard, and it seems to be a process running.
All we do right now on 6.0 is put the gateway address into the network settings of xp computers and it blocks everything appropriately. We don't change any other settings on the xp computer. It blocks sites perfectly. We don't mess with the proxie on ie or anything.
Is squidguard all I need to install to duplicated this result? I didnt set up the 6.0 solution so we are not sure how it was set up in the past. But the solution on 6.0 certainly works.
Regards.
