Title: Help! network down after power failure crash
Post by: chrislaurie on April 25, 2008, 06:14:00 AM
Hi all

Can someone please help me, I cannot seem to make any progress.

I have a patched 7.3 server that seems to have lost its network after a power failure. Up to now it has been fine after a number of these failures (they're working on the lines an  my ups is not big enough it seems).

It boots and I can access the console/root etc but the network is dead.

During the boot process there are a few strange things:

1. I get a number of messages that flashes past about along the lines of: iptable cannot load table ... maybe kernel needs upgrading

2. A message along the lines of: eth0 seems to be absent delaying start

This is a Asus motherboard with an on-board lan that I add a second card to. I have tried a few network cards as well as shutting the on board lan on/off, using only a pci card etc etc.

Can anyone please help me with some trouble shooting tips?

I am now running off a backup sme6.01 server.

Regards

Chris Laurie

You can examine the startup messages at your leisure by using

dmesg | more

I suggest you paste any unusual ones into a message here.

From my experience i would say you have lost some hardware, probably some part of the motherboard has been damaged, and/or the hard disc.

Have you tried memory testing the system?

and perhaps you should run the disc diagnostics for the type of hard disc you have. Actually I find the seagate diags run usefully on most makes of HD.
