Title: resolve pc fqdn instead of pcxxxxx.mycompany.local
Post by: voodoochile on May 14, 2008, 12:20:14 PM
Hello Everybody
I have SME server 7.3 running in server gateway mode. I use dansguardian 2.9.9.2 and squid proxy running using ntlm authentication against windows 2003 active directory.
I am having difficulty getting pc host names to show up in dansguardian logs it shows pc-xxxxx.mycompany.local i would ideally like it to show the fqdn of the pc in respect to our domain.
if i ping "servername" i get a reply pc-xxxxx.mycompany.local if i ping "servername.ourdomain.local" i get unknown host
Running nslookup on the server
[root@smeserver ~]# nslookup
> servername
Server:         192.168.4.25
Address:        192.168.4.25#53

** server can't find servername: NXDOMAIN

where 192.168.4.25 is smeserver address

Any ideas where to start would be appreciated

Thanks

Karl

I have never liked this either.

I tried:
Code: [Select]
db networks setprop 192.168.1.0 NameServer 192.168.1.1
sv t /service/dnscache

and dnscache maxed out one the CPU's for hours until I changed it back.

I also tried:
Code: [Select]
db networks setprop 192.168.1.0 NameServer 127.0.0.1
sv t /service/dnscache

And reverse dnslookup went back to "pc-xxxxx.mycompany.local".

I believe i have the syntax correct. There was an issue with "NameServer" and "Nameserver".

db networks setprop 192.168.0.0 NameServer 192.168.0.1
sv t /service/dnscache

worked for me

now i get fqdn pc resolution in dansguardian logs which is what i was after ....still think my dns is not quite set up right but that can wait for a later date ..........thanks very much

voodoochile,

Does your server now resolve static and dynamic IP's?

I opened a bug for the CPU usage issue I am having on my two machines.

Our ip addresses are given out by windows 2003 dhcp server so i suppose the answer is yes
Here is an excerpt from dansguardian log
showing date time username ip address web site then at the end the fqdn of the pc
