Title: Sudden problem with EURO (€) sign when sending e-mail
Post by: dave simmons on June 02, 2008, 12:49:43 PM
Situation:  Suddenly this morning we have started to get strange messages when sending e-mails which contain the euro symbol (€).  When sending a mail containing this symbol we get the following error message on the pc: (in Dutch language)

"Dit bericht bevat tekst die niet is opgemaakt in de standaardtekenset.  U kunt kiezen uit de volgende opties voor het verzenden van dit bericht:

Verzenden als Unicode

Ongewijzigd verzenden

Annuleren"

I translate this approximately as:

This message contains text which is not coming from the standard character set.  You can choose from the following options to send this message:

Send as Unicode

Send unchanged

Cancel"

This is a message coming from the PC, not from the server.  Choosing send as Unicode or send as unchanged gives the same result - the mesage is sent to the recipient, but without the € symbol in the text.  There is no strange symbol in its place - just an empty space.

This is now happening on all 4 workstations which use Outlook Express (it wasn't happening on Friday!).  One workstation using Outlook instead of Outlook Express can send e-mails which include the € symbol without any problem.

I have googled the error message and find surprisingly only 3 results in Dutch. All seem to suggest a server-problem
(none of the sites had anything to do with SME - they were general internet help sites).

This has only started today, and as far as I am aware, neither workstations or server have had any upgrades applied or installed any new software.  The error message is also not coming from the server, but from the workstation.  In addition, the server is sending the messages to their recipients.  Somewhere, the € symbol is getting dropped.

I'm not suggesting therefore that it is an SME problem, but am posting here in the hope that someone with experience can point me in the right direction.

Thank you in advance.

UPDATE

When Outlook Express sends the EURO € sign, it arrives at the recipient as a question mark.  Maybe explains the strange reactions to some of our quotations to customers!

Outlook (on the same machine) send the EURO sign correctly.

I now know that it is certainly not an SME problem (therefore apologies for posting here), but have spent a day on the web trying to find a solution, without success.  If there is anyone on the forum who can point me in the right direction, I would be very thankful.
