Title: SME Server acting as Proxy/Filter on Win2k3 Domain AD aware. Possible??
Post by: sen10el on June 08, 2008, 02:59:27 PM
Hi Guys
Im looking into using SME as a Proxy/Web Filter on a Windows 2003 Domain and trying to work out a way to make the authentication from AD to the SME server automatic.
I am well versed with config and admin of a SME server but never tried to intergrate one into an existing AD enviroment.

Firstly i have been reading up on Linux and Active Directory here http://www.aerospacesoftware.com/LinuxActiveDirectory.html
All looks pretty complicated but never the less do-able.

I want to be able to give my users on the domain web access on three levels, completely restricted, whitelist access and full access.
I know you can configure SME to do that bit but i need a way to authenticate them against the SME server without them logging on to it.
Considering i have about 85 - 90 users it would be a mamoth tast to add all users manualy to the SME box and add/remove them, also i have a security policy in place that forces the user to change their network password every 30 days so you can imagine what the workload would be to admin the SME server.

So my question has anyone done anything like this before?

Any comments very welcome

If i manage to make this work i will wrtie up a complete HowTo and post it back up.
I'm starting work on this as i type this so i will update this thread as and when.

Thanks in advance

Andy
