Title: Sme server as a vpn router?
Post by: lukebeales on June 18, 2008, 12:28:46 PM
Hi all,
Have tried searching but just returns heaps of pages about client connecting things.

My question is am I able to set up an SME server at a local network site acting as the gateway/dialer/etc. and then have it also connect to another SME server at a remote location (say a head office for example) via PPTP VPN, and allow the local network to access the head office through that SME server transparently?  Thanks for any help in advance.

so what your are asking is can one VPN sme server VPN in to another
if so no you can not SME is is a vpn server only not a VPN client so one else my correct me on this and when you say dailer do you mean a dail in server if that is so the is a contrin i thing you can setup as a dail in server but it is not a part of SME standard base setup so goes for the VPN client

Yes I am needing to join 2 networks and I like how SME works so it would be great to use it as a VPN router for a network, but I realise it's a bit of a tall ask and may not be able to be done.  Doesn't look like there are any non-hardware based solutions out there unfortunately.

Hmm....

I think VIP-Ire has made a contrib for this. See this thread:

http://forums.contribs.org/index.php?topic=33043.0

Search for Site to Site VPN.

the only way i think you could do it would be the main office would have the SME sever the would be the VPN server then you could have all the other offices use a billion modem that supports vpn in or out the 7402r2 support both dial in and dial on vpn with pptp 4 clients
you could have a look at that there are other router that do it like cisco and junipter but they cost large dollars
the contrib that mercyh metioned is still in beta

http://sme.firewall-services.com/spip.php?article2      have alook at this site i matbe what you want

zatnktel,

I posted the start of the thread for the contrib. I think if you read on through all 22  pages of it you will find that the page you referenced is the current version???

disclaimer: I do not use this contrib myself.

Hello,

Leave the SME as a File Server / web server / mail server inside a network behind:

Smoothwall or IPCop
Endian Firewall
Untangle Server
PFSense

All can do site to site IPSec VPN.

JDavey;

Thx for the nudge, I looked at Untangle and what a great product. Installed the webmonitor and reports on a spare pc, stuck it in bridge mode, put it in between switches and firewall. Got my first report last night. Very nice!  :D
