Title: Network Monitoring and Control And Management
Post by: ulas on August 21, 2008, 10:16:54 AM
I want to setup a server that can share internet connection and reports all activity and shows realtime reports.

these reports can be connection reports suchs as which computer uses which port to reach which site or ip and what it makes.

another issue is limiting internet connection. for example , I can set limit  for some computers such as 128K internet connection or 512K or 1024K

I am not looking for content management.

Thanks for all suggestions to solve my problem

If you want a dedicated box that is not SME, this one is really nice:

Or even IPCop. http://www.ipcop.org (http://www.ipcop.org)

Now, if I could get IPCOP to authenticate users via LDAP to the SME Server then I would be REALLY happy. As I understand it the issue here is that the SME Server LDAP deployment is kinda custom and cant be queried by IPCOP.

ANyone want to correct me? I am dying for this feature.

SME Server LDAP can be queried by anything on the local network (e.g. by mail programs). But the LDAP directory only includes user and group name lists, and doesn't contain any password information, so can't be used for authentication.

Wasn't there some work on LDAP authentication on SME 7?

I do know that if you install Open-Xchange (details in this forum), it rebuilds LDAP in a fashion that allows LDAP user authentication. Of course, it may be overkill but it works for me.

Is LDAP authentication on the cards for SME 8.0?
