Title: Gigabit Ethernet

I have a Dell Poweredge 1800 with a built in Gigabit 1000Mip network card.  I can't get it to connect to the Gigabit Switch at 1000Mip, it keeps connecting at 100mip.   I have a Novel Server on the same Hardware configuration and rebooting it connected to the same Gigabit Switch at 1000Mip. 

The SME 7.3 configuration shows its loading up driver e1000 for the Intel Gigabit Card.  Is there a manual switch that I need to add to the driver on bootup?  Any other suggestions?

Try:

config setprop InternalInterface EthtoolOpts "advertise 0x800"
expand-template /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0
ifdown eth0
ifup eth0

If Charlie's suggestion doesn't work, check/replace your network cable(s).  You should be using cat5e or cat6 (cat5 MAY work for very short cables but it is not recommended) and also remember that 1000Mbps uses 4 pair (all 8 wires) as apposed to 100Mbps that only used 2 pair.

I have multiple Intel Gigabit cards using the e1000 driver and they all connect at 1000Mpbs without any additional configuration settings but I have had cable problems that I have had to resolve to get them to work.

I have Cat6 cables going to the server, thats been verified.   I've already done all the hardware troubleshooting, Bios Troubleshooting, etc.  Thats why I thought perhaps there was a software switch on the driver that I didn't know about.   I'll try the suggestions tonight and see how they will do.

About a year ago I purchased a fist full of brand new1 meter "verified CAT5" cables that wouldn't auto-negotiate at GbE speed. Try another cable, preferably another brand.

I am using an Intel desktop-grade GbE NIC in my SME Server without any config changes.

My 1000 connect only 100 because one of eight cable broken .. two times..

Thanks for all the suggestions, I finally found it.  There was a cracked trace on the Cat6 Panel board on pin 7/8.   Thats why I was having so much trouble, I checked every piece of wiring but this is the first time in 10plus years I've had a cracked trace on a punch panel.  While I was testing it, and pushing it in, it worked, but plug all the cat 6 cables in and it didn't.   Go figure.

Still, gotta love SME Servers!

Moral(s) of this story:

1-10/100 will run on *almost* any old wiring/connections.
2-Gigabit needs good (amost even perfect) wiring/connections.
3-Check, double-check and then check that wiring again :-)
