You need to better specify your setup and your errors as a lot of users are successfully running SME Server under VMWare or VMWare machines on SME Server.

error: can not fine hard drive
vmware server 1.xx
what info would you like?
also does the os work fine under virtual pc 2004?

You still did not specify your setup, are you trying to run SME Server as a host OS with VMWare guests or are you trying to run SME Server as a VMWare guest for instance?
Where do you see this error after what actions or instrcutions. Be as complete as you can in describing waht you do and try to write down the error in the exact wording, since I get the opion that you are paraphrasing the error.

Hello
under VMware it goer's very well, but you must some time customise the setup and don't use standard, next next next method's.
I have from every costumier a copy of his config on my VMware server/workstation.
But i you ask some question in these fora you must give more information about you configuration.
Basis hardware, OS en then version off VM and the version off SME you want to install.
Success

no hard drive can not install
Is your VM hard drive greater than 4GB ?

Moving this topic to the SME 7.x contribs forum, it is more appropriate there. Thanks!

SME server 7.3 and 8beta works flawlessly on a properly configured vmware workstation 6 virtual machine...i dont have vmware server but i think they are pretty the same in guest compatibility...so i suggest to double and triple check every setup option in YOUR vmware...

The most easy way to get started with vmware server is to use the sme server as a host system and to use the contrib and the howto.
http://wiki.contribs.org/Vmware (Last time I tried it, it worked perfect for me, but it is a while ago.)
Then it is also possible to run a virtual sme test server or something else under sme server / vmware.
One thing that can be confusing is that a virtual installation made under Vmware workstation will not work under Vmware server. So if you receive or download a virtual server image someone else has made (with Vmware workstation) it might/will not work.
The safe way is to use the howto, and to install a new virtual server from the CD on the server.
During the installation of a virtual server you will get the option of selecting a scssi or a IDE harddisk.
Doing the incorrect choice will later give the message:
error: can not fine hard drive
vmware server 1.xx
(At least it happened to me.)
I don't remember whcih are the right chise, try both.
Of course you will need the Vmware virtual console to work from.
Later on it can be an idea to use an other (Linux) host system than the sme server, but this will be slightly more difficult.
