Title: Wierd Excel save issue to SME
Post by: gbentley on September 15, 2008, 09:13:56 AM
I have this client who says that after the last (most recent) set of updates things have changed.

He used to (probably incorrectly) do some minor file management from the Excel FILE > OPEN dialogue
when moving files around on the SME to his liking.

Now what happens is that if you copy a file and paste it into another directory, Excel cannot then open
it and complains that it is not of a recognised type.

This doesnt happen on C:\ - It also doesnt happen using Window Explorer - It only happens when using
the FILE > OPEN dialogue to do minor fileman.

I have told him not to do it anyway, and he says that he has done it that way for the last 3 years.

Seems really odd !

If you try and Google or look for artcicles on Excel you get swamped
and led on some right goose chasing. Just wondered if anyone else had
anything like this?

What version of Windows OS is he running? I have had a similar problem with a customer. Everything was working fine on Windows XP SP2. After one of Microslops automatic upgrades to SP3 everything went bad. Excel 2000 quit working altogether, Microsoft Word would not retain templates, Quickbooks calculated wrong. etc. After removing SP3 things cleared up but not completely. Had to do a clean install on the OS. This customer has SMEServer 7.3. It turned out NOT to be a SME error but a Windows error. Hope this helps.
