Title: Web-based email not working
Post by: Rob on May 07, 2002, 05:16:32 PM
I just installed my esmith server and gateway and i don't want it to run as an email server. So i havn't configured it but it won't let me check my email online. It just gives an error message, it also won't let me check pop3 acconts from other computers on the network. Hotmail can be checked but all my other email addy's won't let me. I am sure this is just a simple n0ob prob but if u can help please post a reply

Are you trying to use the web based email ON YOUR E-SMITH SERVER?
IF so, have you enabled it?
HAVE YOU READ THE INSTRUCTION MANUAL?
This would be the obvious thing that I suspect you may have not done, but I also can interpret about three other situations that you MAY be trying from your description above.
Please give a LOT more information. Your problem description is not particularly good. You're more likely to get an answer if you take pain to describe what is happening.

To follow up on Andy's message, if you get an error message, post it.  Tell us what you're doing when you get it.  "it won't let me" doesn't give us anything to work with.  Be detailed.

ok sorry for the brief description, I am using my e-smith server as a gateway to run the internet access for three other machines. The internet works fine on all three computers, but when i try to check my web based email at www.com(an email provider like hotmail or yahoo) I get an error message when i go to log in saying that it was unable to resolve the dns lookup for the webpage. This only happens to computers on my network using the gateway. I can still access hotmail but i can't access www.com and subdimension.com.

Thanx

Can you ping your web based email site from any of the machines on the network?
If you can't, it appears to be a DNS problem with those addresses.
Experimenting with DNS server settings on your network machines may prove fruitful here.
At this point, I run screaming and hope that Dan can help you out better than me.

If you can't ping www.com from one of the machines on your LAN, how about from the server?  I am able to ping both of those sites from my system, FWIW...

I can access the front page it's just when i go to log into any of these accounts
here is the error message:

The requested URL could not be retrieved

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

While trying to retrieve the URL: http://mail19.bigmailbox.com/users/wwwcom/mailnf.cgi?

The following error was encountered:

Unable to determine IP address from host name for mail19.bigmailbox.com
The dnsserver returned:

No DNS records
This means that:

The cache was not able to resolve the hostname presented in the URL.
Check if the address is correct.

Your cache administrator is root.

This is what i recieve after i log in to my account the same thing for everyone i have tried except hotmail, i think i might have somethint to do with the way these places recieve their email and a conflict between that and my server.

I have not added a dns or anything to my server i just use it as a gateway, that's all i need it for

Thanx
