Running SME 7.3 on a VIA EPIA-800 board with a slow CPU (800MHz and 400MHz FPU) and USB 1.1 ports. Currently with 40GB data.
Even with these specifications I decided to try a backup to a USB harddrive.
It is slow - After 13 hours only 75% have been done.
I guess that I have two bottlenecks here.
1. Slow compression of data due to slow CPU/FPU
2. Slow datatransfer over USB
If possible I would like just to add all data to one file for backup without any compression. So how do I change the settings for compressing data?
Best regards

Hi
Please accept a tip from a Epia 9000 owner (933Mhz): buy yourself an PCI USB 2.0 card (with 4 external ports + a internal one) if you have no use to your PCI slot so far.

Hi cpndk
I agree strongly with jader's suggestion.
A USB 1.1 port has two speeds: the base 1.5 Mbits/s and a top of 12 Mbits/s
USB 2.0 has a top of 480 Mbits/s - that's somewhat in excess of 40 Mbytes/s, since there can be many reasons why a data transfer does not happen at the maximum speed, no matter what the device.
The main thing is that with USB2.0, you get get a speed up factor of about 40 times.
They are on Ebay now for less than AUD15.00 (Australian dollars) including postage from Hong Kong.
Sorry I can't help you with your compression question.
