Title: I need to reduce server bandwidth
Post by: crazybob on October 06, 2008, 01:27:26 PM
I am using SME7.3 in server only mode. The server is used as a web, email, file server. The company that supplies the office VOIP, wants me to throttle the traffic leaving the server as it may be causing dropouts in the outgoing VOIP data stream when there is high web/external email access.
I thought about using wondershaper, but in this configuration I don't think it would work, because it would not be aware of the VOIP traffic.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Bob

Hi

if you are using SME in server-only mode, you'd have a firewall between wan and SME, don't you?

so, you should play with your FW to have sme bandwidth management..

Hi Stefano, There is a firewall, but I do not have control over it. It is controlled by the VOIP company. They feel that droups are being caused by data bursts coming from the server and flooding the outgoing bandwidth. I have no control over the firewall. I am going through motions in an attempt to please the customer.

Hi Bob..

maybe I don't understand, but if they have control on FW, they should be able to control outgoing traffic PER ip..

firewalls like m0n0wall http://m0n0.ch/wall (http://m0n0.ch/wall) can easily do it..

since problems raise with (quoting your words) "web/external mail access"), you can't control it.. they have to.

I think they feel it is that the server is flooding the network before it gets to the firewall.

ALT! :-)

if the problem is with bandwidth on the WAN side (outgoing from the router and incoming from wan) it's a FW issue.. it's the FW itself that decide who can go out (and how) and who can come in (and, again, how)..

I think that the problem can not be on the lan side because with a 100 Mbit lan there should be enough bandwidth for VOIP.. if not, time to upgrade all (eth, cables, switches etc)  to 1Gb..

Thanks Stefano,
I don't think the customer is ready to make that jump, so he will live with it.

Bob,

Stefano is right!

I have exactly same configuration as you, the only difference my firewall is pfSense (a m0n0wall fork). Your firewall must shape traffic incoming/outgoing your WAN interface. Don't do anything to your LAN.

Some additional info would be helpful...

1. Who is the ISP and are they providing voip in a package deal and their stated provided Bandwidth U/D?
2. Single or Muli line voip?
3. Internet Speedtest results?
4. What type of switches are in use, can you set port speed, flow control, QOS per port or just a plain switch.
5. Is the voip incorporated into the modem/router and the Model #.
6. If voip is a separate unit, the Model #.

Since this is not a SME issue per say, you may contact via PM and I will provide our support # or support chat link.

Although upgrading the local network to giga bit will improve local and wan performance it will not address the
voip problem directly and thus may not provide the desired voip solution.

That may be true, however we have never experienced that with any of our customers.

I'm sure the provider would configure their equipment if you direct them to your specific needs appropriately.

In our experience, most providers will give you the information needed, to do the allowed configurations yourself.

Typically if their equipment is located on site they will provide information to allow user access to allowed user configuration.

However in this case you probably won't need to have that ability and it's nice to know for the next customer where you may need to know.

The requested information above is necessary to provide a solution to the voip issues.

Without the information and the understanding, one can only provide shoot in the dark solutions.

That may not be the desired approach you want to project to a customer.

Have a good day...

1. ISP is a company called Michwave. They are a wireless broadband provider. They are not the voip provider.
2. it is a multi line
3. Internet speeds are a around the 1000 to1300 mark. They are supposed to be a T1
4. Switches are just plain linksys switches, no controls.
5. Voip is not in the router. I am not sure what model the device is, and I am not on location.
6. Each phone is it's own device. It just hangs on the network. I have no Idea as to make and model.

The VOIP provider appears have solved the problem. They are not getting any drop outs on the uplink side of this. I have no idea what they did.

Thanks to all
