Ladies & gentlemen, I would like to solicit your opinions, thoughts, & recommendations on the best bulletin board/forum setup for SME, with consideration given to flexibility and ease of use. Remember, these are end users who really don't care about the mechanics of the process, just getting their points across.
Many thanks for your time & consideration.

1. SME developers need to do their job effectively.
2. SME developers have chosen a listserv, rather than bull. brd., as their preferred method of communication.
3. Therefore, SME developers believe they do their job more effectively with a listserv rather than a bb.
4. Therefore, I believe I can learn more effectively with a listserv rather than a bb.
Look at the bb right now. How many unanswered questions are there? Too many. Were we on a listserv, there would be more.
The reason is because listserv comes to your inbox, whereas bb is something that does not come to you, but instead you have to go to it.

1. I think you are misunderstanding the topic of this thread. I think the poster was soliciting opinions on what type of BBS systems works well that someone could install on their own SME server. To answer that question, I would say phpBB is a very good choice. Version 2 has some good features and there is a very well done How-To in the contrib area by Dan Brown.
2. You can have the messages from this bbs delivered to your inbox. I have done this. You cannot reply directly from your inbox, but there is a handy link to the thread within each message. I respond to the messages that I feel my input would be useful, I read the ones that I find interesting and I delete the rest. Don't see this as a big deal.

I prefer Discus from www.discusware.com
Easy to install (no specific E-smith/SME how-to needed, just put it in primary or an ibay), very flexible in setup, easy to use. The fastest forumsoftware I know. Posts can be delivered by mail and can be replied to by mail. Extended search facilities.

I like phpBB2, FWIW, but I've only compared it to Phorum (and a pretty old version of phorum at that).

Thanks for the input! The latter three posts are exactly what I had in mind. Would it be possible to point me toward sites where each of these programs are running, so I can have a look at them in action? Many thanks for your time in replying!

http://support.discusware.com/forum/ runs the latest Discus version,
http://support.discusware.com/forum/messages/136/136.html is the Discus Showcase with many sites running Discus.
-
Oh I forgot to say -- Discus has absolutely the BEST support I've ever seen, even for the freeware version!

Well, phpBB is running on my server at http://www.familybrown.org/phpBB2/index.php, but it's not very active. Probably the best place to see an active one is at phpbb.com.
-
Having run phpBB 2 for a while, I can suggest that it will be more user friendly and has more capability than the Discus free version for the same price :)
I'm a little biased, but I also prefer the look of phpBB2
This is my 2.2c including GST (Australia just HAD to follow the rest of the world)

I went with phpBB with the "Chronicles" skin or theme or whatever you want to call it. Looks great! The site is dedicated to a local book club so I don't think it'll be of much interest to the world in general, but I can tell you that thanks to Dan Brown's howto mentioned above it was a complete piece of cake to set up. Thanks Mr. Brown!!!!
