Hi
I am a newbie but have previously run both sendmail and dovecot on Fedora. I decided, in the hope of an easy life, to replace my email system with SME Server and have therefore installed SME Server 7.3.
However try as a might I can't seem to get it to receive email from external sites. When I do remote email testing I find that my system is refusing connection.
I have used eg http://www.hq42.net/net_tools/test_email_addr.php
When I log onto the server or from my local network I can telnet to the smtp system
I notice that hosts.allow does not have a smtpd : allow line or something similar - is this the issue or is the problem elsewhere
(my m/c is configured both for gateway and server roles)

Do you have a valid domain configured, and external DNS records configured correctly to point that domain name to your sme servers external IP ?
Do you have a static or dynamic IP ?

Was a school boy error - my firewall (2wire from BT) noticed that the computer (or rather the NIC) had changed and switched on the firewall for the server IP address (previously it had been in a DMZ).
Next problem is after installing certificates (from cacert) and changing the password strength to normal (and back to strong) SME server now refuses to accept any user password (except admin's) - not sure if I have corrupted something. Can't log in via webmail or via outlook or entourage (all were working last night).

hi
how did you change password strength?
if you want, there's a contrib for it
yum --enablerepo=smecontribs install smeserver-password

That's a fairly sure sign that the connection is not reaching your SME server. Unless you have modified it, or tweaked under the covers, SME server will accept SMTP connections from any address.

Never quite worked out what went wrong - I ended up doing a reinstall.
I am scared to change the password strength but the insertion of non alphanumeric characters is a pain. Eg I put in a hash ie # (via my pc keyboard) and then found that my mac wireless mini (ie reduced size keyboard) does not have it.
Uggh.
