I have been looking for an gui interface for mysql. I don't want to add anything that will break the sme functions. Are there any suggestions?

Have you had a look at PHPMyAdmin?
Start at the wiki with one of these pages:
http://wiki.contribs.org/PHPMyAdmin (http://wiki.contribs.org/PHPMyAdmin)
http://wiki.contribs.org/Phpmyadminmulti (http://wiki.contribs.org/Phpmyadminmulti)

you can always use one of the thousands windows/linux mysql client.. the only things to do on SME are:
- open mysql to local network
- create an user with privileges

for all infos, search the forums and the wiki and you'll find everything you need to know about it

Ciao

On a windows platform you could use HeidiSQL.
Free and a very active developer.
