Is it possible to b/u more than one SME system to the same USB drive (without deleting the 1st b/u)? Will the b/u create a new b/u file, or does the console USB b/u replicate the entire file structure?
Also, is it necessary to run any commands when removing a USB drive from the system, of can it just be turned off?

If you use the backup with dar contrib, then each server's backup resides in a separate directory on the USB hard drive.

You could manually access the usb device and rename the default backup filename to something unique to the machine you backed up. Just keep in mind that you would need to rename this file back to the original SME default filename if/when you needed to restore.
In short, the current Console Backup to USB option will blindly overwrite any previous backup file located on the USB device.
As David points out, the dar contrib will give you the ability to backup your system to USB using unique backup sets.

So, no need to run any commands or anything when done with the USB drive? Just turn it off is fine to unplug it?

If you use backup with dar, the USB drive is automatically unmounted ("safely removed" in Windows terminology) when the backup is complete. So yes, you can just turn it off when the backup is completed.
