Title: Access to Internet not working in two server network
Post by: hroesler on October 29, 2008, 01:26:36 AM
Hi,
I have recently replaced my router with an second SME server machine on my LAN, and now find that the first SME server will not access the internet. Here are some details on the configuration:

Server 1: SME 7.3, server only mode, IP=192.168.1.22, workgroup=WORKGROUP, gateway=192.168.1.1, DHCP disabled

Server 2: SME 7.3, gateway & private server mode, IP=192.168.1.11, workgroup=WORKGROUP, WAN IP=66.51.135.109, gateway=66.51.135.1, DHCP enabled starting at 192.168.1.100

I am able to access both servers on the LAN, and internet access is successfully being provided to clients on the LAN by server 2. Updates are successfully retrieved and installed on server 2.

On server 1, when there were no updates, I tested internet access and it is not working.

There is some interaction between the two servers that is preventing server 1 from accessing the internet, but I don't know where to start.

Server 1 will work properly when the gateway server is replaced with the old router to connect to the internet (Server 2 is powered down for this).

Can two servers (one in server only mode, the other in gateway&private server mode) co-exist on the same LAN and workgroup? The objective was to provide a FTP service to the outside (server 2) while maintaining a more secure server for local use in the office (server 1).

Maybe I am going about this the wrong way....any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

You need to make the gateway address on server 1 and the local ip on server 2 the same. It doesn't really matter which one you change.

That doesn't really sound correct.

hroesler should login as admin on server1 and run configure this server, and then in one of the pages towards the end of the setup, specify the server2 local IP as the gateway address for Internet access eg 192.168.1.11

Hi,
I have recently replaced my router with an second SME server machine on my LAN, and now find that the first SME server will not access the internet. Here are some details on the configuration:

Server 1: SME 7.3, server only mode, IP=192.168.1.22, workgroup=WORKGROUP, gateway=192.168.1.1, DHCP disabled

Server 2: SME 7.3, gateway & private server mode, IP=192.168.1.11, workgroup=WORKGROUP, WAN IP=66.51.135.109, gateway=66.51.135.1, DHCP enabled starting at 192.168.1.100

It sounds to me like your previous router had the IP address 192.168.1.1.   Suggest you access the Console on Server 2 (your new router) and reconfigure this box, setting the IP to 192.168.1.1.  Once you have the server reconfigured, use the Test Internet Connection option to make sure Server 2, as the router(gateway), can access the internet.

Can two servers (one in server only mode, the other in gateway&private server mode) co-exist on the same LAN and workgroup? The objective was to provide a FTP service to the outside (server 2) while maintaining a more secure server for local use in the office (server 1).

Yes.  You can have as many servers as you want on your LAN, but you can have only one gateway between your LAN and the internet (this isn't absolutely true, but true enough that you can run with it).

Yes, you are correct, the router had local IP 192.168.1.1

I have changed the IP address of server 1 to 192.168.1.1, and after rebooting the server and clients on our LAN, all seems to be working normally.

I checked internet access via the console on server 2 and it now successfully connects!

Thanks for the help! It's my first attempt with SME server as a gateway and I am pleased with how easy SME server is to work with (for a newbie like me).

Kudos to the SME development group and members on this forum!
