Hello
I have done a search on the forum regarding installing and using ADSL on an existing SME v5 server, but can't find anything - so apologies for a repeat if I have missed it!
I am contemplating upgrading my V90 dial up to ADSL (self install) and I am looking for pointers to ease this transition.
My hardware will not support USB so I am lookin at installing a second NIC (as eth1) and using an ADSL modem with ethernet connection. Are there any pitfalls that I need to look out for?
Any help appreciated!
Many thanks in advance.
Regards

It is all fairly easy with e-smith. adsl-setup is handy as it allows you to configure your adsl. I have only got 1 nic in my server and have the modem in the uplink port in my hub and works great!!

Thanks Chris
btw is adsl-setup part of e-smith?

What sort of ADSL device will you be using? I am using the Alcatel SpeedTouch (provided by KPN in the Netherlands) which I have configured as a PAT/Router. The hack to do this is well documented. Go to www.google.com and search on Alcatel SpeedTouch. You can then open up some pinholes for each of the desired services. See http://www.nzdsl.co.nz/howtos/Alcatel/alcatelpinholing.html.
The only downside that I have found is that ftp does not seem to work when I try to access my server using its fqdn as know from the outside. I think that something is going heywire with the FTP protocol itself.
I have wondered if there is a solution to originate at PPTP tunnel on the e-smith server such that I can essentially pull the PPP session from my providers BAS through the ATM cloud into the CPE and then through a PPTP tunnel into the e-smith server. I guess you would treat this as an dialup connection that was always-on..
Anybody every tried the later idea?
Regards,
Mark

I found that the Draytek Vigor 2200 USB router from www.seg.co.uk which will take the Alcatel speedtouch usb frog (and also the Fujitsu modem) is brilliant.
Also, if you haven't ordered your ADSL yet you may want to look at www.adslguide.org and this article regarding free modems at The Register - http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/6/25275.html
Hope this helps ;)

Is the Vigor easy to configure? I've read good reviews, and keen to get one. Meantime, I'm still trying to get the USB working directly. Being a newbie sure hurts some times :)

FYI - I am currently using an Alcatel Speedtouch USB and I am putting together a tar file with all the files needed to make this work. You will of course need to manually edit some config files which I will document to try to make this process as painless as possible. I am no programer and a bit of newbie to this myself but the the need for an easy solution for this seems to be out there and it my way of giving something back. There is a company in the UK that is putting together a pre-installed SME server which they call the TiX box who would be happy to help but for a charge...... if you interested in this tar then mail me derectly and I will try to help. Also if there is any-one who could put together a console script to config this and then bundle it up in an RPM please get in touch....

The Vigor 2200 USB is dead easy to configure - you need a Windows PC to download the modem firmware into the router but this is a once only thing. Once the firmware is in everything else can be done through a browser. Even the firmware updates are supposed to be possible using tftp (I've only flashed it once and I used the supplied Windows utility to do it).
Vigor to Vigor and Vigor to Windows VPNs are a snap too.
I'm with Zen at the moment and am considering taking up an additional 8 IP addresses for £25 (If you have home ADSL using the Alcatel frog you need something like the Vigor to make a block of IPs work....)
If I can be of further help, just give me a shout.
David.

Aquired some server space of a mate and I have put the files there.
Please read the readme.txt
NOTE: the console program is still in BETA so take care.
