Title: Saving copies of master file in same folder??
Post by: workgroupissue on December 15, 2008, 11:51:29 PM
Hi Ev1,

I use a workgroup folder in work, it contains various excel, word docs etc, one member of the group keeps saving copies of the masterfiles within the workgroup folder, apart from seeing loads of copies and having to scroll down to find the masterfile, are there any other issues that can be brought about by someone creating copies of these files within the same folder. I mean can the "saved as" copies cause any issues for the data within the masterfiles??. For example when in the excel masterfile, only one person at a time can update data, and the others have read only access, would the person using the copy file cause any issues with the masterfile. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Tom.

AFAIK can see this has nothing to do with SME Server, it looks more like an office related question to me. I think you will find your answer in a Office related forum more quickly.

I think, that a saved copy is a copy and unless it has macros that write in the original file it should not modify anything there, but I am not that familiar with Office.
