Title: I am very happy with the return of contribs.org
Post by: Normando on January 15, 2009, 07:42:36 PM
The last week I have very missed contribs.org because I was intalled 2 servers and I needed to make some tweaks.

Thank you Shad for the effort recovering data and power up the site again!
The same for administrators and moderator

Another happy user here.

I was close to running out of disk space and used AFFA to migrate my server to new hardware over the weekend.  Had to rely on Google cache pages for reference.  AFFA worked flawlessly.

Realized how much I depend on the site and sent a long overdue donation.

Cheers to all!

Adding my thanks for the team's effort! I hadn't realized how addicted I was to contribs.org until it went missing.

I know a number of people were going through withdrawal and some side email conversations were happening.

I'll document in posts the outcome of stuff I was involved with.

Christian

I must thirded (or foutheded?) this. I didn't realize how much I browse the forums or read the wiki.

Glad to see its back up. Of course we could set up mirrors... I would love to mirror contribs.org but I can only use https (see sig) & am on a dynamic IP.

I'm just curious as to what backup software you guys use that took you a week to be back online?!

I use BRU Server for Linux (http://www.tolisgroup.com/products/bruserver/) and that's how I backup my SME Server.  When I had it crash about a year ago, ironically, I was back up and running in two hours.

I doubt you will have the required bandwidth nor the hardware needed if you have such a connection.

It was not only backup that needed to be restored and imagine the time it takes to restore Terrabytes of data.

The contribs.org domain is far more than only one SME Server it is a complete and complex server farm.

I realized this after I found out it was a server farm and how much traffic contribs.org gets. Still, just a thought for the future: If it ever goes down again, in the status page there should be a link to the SME Server torrent on linuxtracker so that people can still download it.

Just my $.02  :-D

The issue had nothing to do with backup software.   Contribs.org suffered a major hardware failure that knocked out the primary RAID array and thereby the server farm that contribs.org lives on.  We are talking terrabytes of data.   The entire server farm was down, so there was nothing to restore the data too.

As stated in the announcement, steps are being taken to prevent this type of outage from happening again in the future.

Remember, Contribs.org is run 100% by volunteers on hardware they donate.  The best thing everyone in the community can do to help with this effort is make a donation.
